“African’s grandest gathering”, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), will be hosting various workshops at the Southern Sun Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town on 28 and 29 March 2014. The programme includes urban master classes, music business classes and jazz master classes with visiting jazz artists and members from the public.
The urban master classes take the form of an informal panel discussion and an interactive platform for artists to share their professional and personal experiences with the public. The sessions cover a wide range of topics including album sales, instrumentation and technology, networking and more. Members of the audience can ask the panel questions about living and working as music professionals.
The music business classes focus on developing business skills in the music industry. It deals with changes in the industry, providing tools for up-an-coming business people to adapt and sustain their business. It also covers various essential music business, and cutting edge information.
The jazz master classes for established musicians concentrate on techniques and skills through various music dynamics, intermit discussions and interaction with Jazz Masters.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is contributing towards the workshops from its cultural tourism budget. William Masemola of DCAS says the Department’s emphasis during the CTIJF is on the development of semi-professional and professional local musicians.
