Partners invest in young Western Cape cyclists

With the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum Cycle Tour rapidly approaching, the Nedbank Sports Trust Cycling Development Programme handed over bicycles and cycling kits to promising young cyclists on Wednesday, 26 February 2014. The programme is currently working with cyclists from 13 disadvantaged schools and a development club in Cape Town, with support from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

As proof of their potential, 150 programme participants are set to compete in the 2014 Cycle Tour. The 70 bicycles and 170 cycling kits will help create further opportunities for young people to develop their skills and participate in competitions. The best of them may become the cycling champions of the future. DCAS will support programme participants competing in the Cycle Tour by providing them with transport and accommodation.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer said the partnership between the Western Cape Government, Nedbank and the Sports Trust is developing future leaders and will continue to play a transformational role in the lives of many recipients. “As the level of fitness and skill develops, young cyclists learn the valuable life lesson that hard work and commitment to any task brings rewards. Once this happens, the confidence will emerge to take on anything that life throws at them.”

Ms Anita Mathews of the Sports Trust said through cycling, the programme has changed the lives of these youngsters by building their determination to succeed. “It has empowered them to live healthier and disciplined lives. We are rewarding them for their great efforts and achievements.”

The opportunity to participate in the largest individually timed cycling event in the world brought joy to many programme participants. Eben Deerling (20) of De Doorns Development Club says he and his fellow cyclists are grateful. “Through the programme, we are able to realise our dreams.”
