Media Statement: Western Cape Mourns the Death of SA Track Cycling Champion

12 February 2014

It is with much sadness that I note the passing of multiple track cycling champion Jeanne Nell. His tragic fall during the Keiran race at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town last night and his subsequent death is a devastating blow to cycling.

When I announced my intention to focus on the development of cycling in the Western Cape, it was the likes of Nell who grabbed the imagination of many aspiring young cyclists. His enthusiasm, commitment and sterling performances are some of the reasons why cycling is experiencing an upsurge in interest. Cycling has lost a true champion and ambassador.

One behalf of the Western Cape Government we express our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
