EPWP Beneficiaries Graduate From Artscape Technicical Training

27 November 2013

There were big smiles all round as seven Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) beneficiaries received their certificates in technical stage practice at Artscape on 25 November 2013.

This Stellenbosch University short course is accredited at Level 6 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The training is a collaborative venture between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and Artscape to implement the Environmental and Culture Sector component of the EPWP in the Western Cape.

Head of the Artscape Technical Training Academy Kobus Rossouw designed the course to provide theoretical and practical training in the key technical disciplines of professional theatre arts. Modules include: theatre practice in the live performing arts industry; theatre health and safety regulation and risk management; professional stage management; theatre lighting and sound practice; theatre design practice; and production management.

DCAS Head of Department Brent Walters said that the EPWP projects managed by his Department aim to equip young people with marketable skills in the arts and culture sector. CEO of Artscape Michael Maas welcomed the collaboration as an opportunity to generate highly sought-after technical theatre skills.

DCAS Chief Director of Cultural Affairs Hannetjie du Preez said that the course was the only one of its kind in South Africa and already opportunities had opened up for graduates to work in theatres and at festivals. Eight new EPWP beneficiaries will undergo the training in 2014.
