Celebrating Sports and Culture at Heritage Festival in Grassy Park

25 September 2013

About 800 young people took part in Heritage Day sports, arts and culture activities from baseball to breakdancing at the Fairmount High School in Grassy Park on 24 September 2013.

The celebration was part of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Mass Participation, Opportunity and Access, Development and Growth (MOD) after-hours programme which is offered at 181 schools across the Western Cape.

The day aimed to encourage more learners to take an interest in the baseball, softball and basketball activities on offer at MOD centres.

“I want my team to learn that events like these are not just about winning, but about having fun and making new friends” said Mr Thandile Lalaze, coach of the Isalathiso softball team from Eden District.

Talent scouts from around the Western Cape attended the festival, hoping to identify promising young players for their clubs. The best players could also get a chance to attend Sharp Centre talent development programmes at the Western Cape Sport School.

After a long day of playing the sports they love, participants were treated to a fun-filled “zumba” class by Lenge Kalenga. The best arts students from various MOD centres performed poetry, dance and song and the crowd showed its appreciation by singing and clapping along. The youngest performer was only seven years old, making it clear that nobody is too young to shine.

The festival was an exciting showcase of young talent in sport, arts and culture. It showed that, with the opportunities and support of DCAS MOD centres, young people can raise themselves up to great heights, better together.
