Recognising women, girls and disabled people during Women’s month

27 August 2013

The unique contribution of women, girls and disabled people to Western Cape communities was recognised during a provincial Women’s Month event at the N Otto Hall in Porterville on Saturday, 24 August 2013.

Various sport and recreational activities took place on the day and the streets were closed so that disabled and able-bodied people could play sport together, with members of the public cheering them on.

The event was a partnership between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the provincial women and girls’ sport committee and Disability Sport Western Cape. It was scheduled to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the establishment of this historic town in the West Coast region.

Prizes were handed over to the best participants in various events, there were many recreational games for young people, and a “beauty therapy” session was offered by Sh’Zen. The Wes Kaap Drama Group put on a performance to entertain the crowd, and athletes of the West Coast Kick Boxing Association conducted self-defence training.

The Deputy Mayor of Berg River Municipality, Ms Sandra Crawfort, said women face many daily struggles. “Despite this, they still manage to play a vital role in their households. Through this event, we celebrate all the women who make a difference in the world every day.”

Member of Parliament and keynote speaker, Ms Alta Rossouw, praised DCAS for reaching out to hundreds of people through sport and recreational activities and encouraged people to show more tangible appreciation for each other. “Let’s care for one another for the next 150 years and continue making a difference in the lives of others,” she said.

DCAS and its partners demonstrated how women, girls and disabled people can be honoured for their care, strength, wisdom and enthusiasm. On the day, women and men, girls and boys, disabled and able-bodied people, showed how they could all be better together.
