Creating Cycling Opportunities at Porterville Festival

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer joined development cyclists and members of the Porterville community in two separate 15km mountain bike races on 23 and 24 August 2013. The visit coincided with the 150-year anniversary of this historic town in the West Coast region.

The races gave young cyclists the opportunity to take part in a growing sport in the Western Cape, while also promoting healthy lifestyles and the safety of cyclists on our roads.

Dr Meyer thanked the young cyclists for their enthusiasm and for making use of this opportunity. “I’m glad to see so many young people taking an interest in cycling and enjoying it. Cycling creates opportunities to live healthy and your participation shows that you are interested in the sport. This bug has bitten many cyclists here today, some of which was their first race.”

Mr Elton Davids, who is actively promoting cycling in the country, said the race offered a different angle to the festival. “Cycling is not so prominent on the West Coast but with the establishment of the West Coast Cycling Federation last year, this race is a step in the right direction.”

The Executive Mayor of Berg Municipality, Councillor Evert Manuel, who also took part in the races, said he hoped cycling could grow in this part of the district. He thanked the minister for taking part in the programme.

Mr Adam Du Plooy, organiser of the festival, said the minister’s visit to the town promoted sport tourism, while inspiring young people to take part in fun sporting codes.
