Focus on Women, Girls and Disabled People in Sport

22 August 2013

The Provincial Women and Girls Committee Disability Sport Western Cape and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) will jointly be hosting a prestigious provincial Women’s Month event on Saturday 24 August 2013 at the N Otto Hall in Porterville. The event coincides with the 150-year anniversary of the establishment of this historic town in the West Coast region.

Women’s Month celebrates the role women play in building South Africa. National Women’s Day commemorates the historic protest against the pass laws that took place at the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956. The theme for 2013 is: “A Centenary of Working Together towards Sustainable Women Empowerment and Gender Equality”.

Various activities have been planned for the day, including a “beauty therapy” session offered by Sh’Zen and many recreational games for the young and vibrant youth. Sport events will cater for disabled as well as able-bodied participants.

Ms Agnetha Jeftha of DCAS Sport Promotion says the event is an investment in the women of the Western Cape and that it aims to inspire people to value and respect each other. “Our broader aims are to use sport to support the emergence of strong, independent women and girls and persons with disability,” said Jeftha.

DCAS and its partners are working better together to honour our women with disabilities for their care, strength, wisdom and enthusiasm. This is an essential building block of a socially inclusive society in the Western Cape.
