Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Celebrates Women

6 August 2013

On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws. National Women’s Day is celebrated on 9 August every year to commemorate that historic event. The day reminds us of all the remarkable women who helped to mould South Africa into a democracy.

The theme for 2013 is: “A Centenary of Working Together Towards Sustainable Women Empowerment and Gender Equality”.

Various activities have been planned by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) during Women’s Month to invest in the women of the Western Cape and to inspire people to value and respect each other.

DCAS honours stakeholders and colleagues for their care, strength, wisdom and enthusiasm towards creating a socially inclusive society in the Western Cape.

They are appreciated and the department acknowledges their contributions in our lives. May they continue to reach their goals and together we can continue to build an equal society Better Together.
