CHAN 2014 Delegation Visits Cape Town

5 August 2013

A delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) visited the Cape Town Stadium and the Athlone Stadium last week to assess their readiness to host matches in the CHAN 2014 African Nations Championship.

Sixteen nations will compete for honours in the third CHAN (Championnat Afrique de Nations) to be held in Cape Town, Polokwane and Bloemfontein from 11 January to 1 February 2014.

The delegation also visited recommended training sites and hotels and inspected broadcast facilities before engaging in a briefing session with officials of SAFA (SA Football Association) Cape Town, the City of Cape Town and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

CAF First Vice President Mr Almany Kabele Camara said he was pleased with the progress made by the City of Cape Town. Having hosted a successful FIFA World Cup in 2010, Camara was confident that the city will pull it off again. “The stadiums have outstanding facilities and the hotels are impressive. We look forward to see this tournament being staged in Cape Town again,” said Camara.

City of Cape Town Director for Events Ms Teral Cullen added, “We’ll definitely be ready. The people of Africa will only have to bring their own music.”

The partners are working better together to make CHAN 2014 a memorable tournament for the African continent.
