67 Minutes at MOD Centre for Tata Madiba

19 July 2013

The Premier of the Western Cape Ms Helen Zille and the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer spent their 67 minutes for Madiba in the classroom and on the sports field at Cavalleria Primary School in Kraaifontein. They joined people all over the world in celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day, 18 July 2013.

The visitors were welcomed by learners playing music and displaying colourful posters and inspirational messages in support of Tata Mandela. Ms Zille read a story on modern heroes to a Grade 6 class and discussed it with the learners. “Many of our heroes have shown that it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can still inspire others. Your future is not determined by your past. And that is why Tata is both a hero and an idol,” she said.

The Premier spoke to parents and teachers about the many daily challenges they face. She urged learners at all schools to make use of the available educational, sport and recreational opportunities to shape their future for the better. Ms Zille also encouraged them to participate in the Mass participation, Opportunity and Access, Development and Growth (MOD) programme, which provides sporting, arts and cultural activities for learners after school.

Principal Mr Herchelle Cornelius thanked the dignitaries for inspiring and giving hope to the learners, parents and teachers. Dr Meyer told learners to work together with their parents and teachers towards a better future. “The best way to fight poverty is through education and sport. It encourages everybody to work together.”

This year’s commemoration of Mandela Day comes at a time of deep reflection on his life and work as the universally revered leader lies in hospital. The Western Cape Government is inspired by Madiba’s words: “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.”
