Minister Meyer Appoints Members of Sport Arbitration Forum

25 June 2013

“We want sport to be played on the field, and not in court”.

This was the message from the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, after announcing the 10 members of the Western Cape Sport Arbitration Forum in Cape Town on Thursday, 20 June 2013.

The forum is an independent body that facilitates the settlement of sport disputes through mediation or arbitration. The sport federations of the Western Cape can utilise this process by referring cases to it. The forum was established in 1998 with the promulgation of the Sport Amendment Act. This Act provides the Western Cape Government with the leverage to intervene in sport disputes.

Dr Meyer said he was proud to announce the names of the candidates who would serve on the forum. “The strategic objective of this Commission is to assist our federations to deal with disputes in a more efficient and effective way. It will also enhance good governance in sport,” he said.

Dr Meyer said that the forum will also develop programmes which will empower federations to prevent disputes and to resolve disputes within a limited time period. He added that the committee will contribute to social cohesion in the province.

The chairperson of the forum, Advocate André Oosthuizen, said that they are committed to co-operate with federations to prevent talented Western Cape athletes from going astray due to in-fighting.
