Creating Room for Sport Excellence at School in Khayelitsha

23 May 2013

Supplying sports equipment and attire to iQhayiya Secondary School in Khayelitsha and Tafelsig High School in Mitchells Plain will contribute to an active, creative and winning province. These were the sentiments expressed by the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer at a handover ceremony in Khayelitsha on Tuesday, 21 May 2013.

The event formed part of the Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) School Sport League project to provide support to schools across South Africa. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and Western Cape Education Department (WCED) supported this outreach initiative.

“This investment by SRSA saw us plant seeds together here in Khayelitsha today. Now it’s up to us to water the seeds and come back in three months’ time to see whether they have grown,” he said. Through investing in school sport, SRSA, DCAS and WCED can indeed be “Better Together”.

“Yohlukanani neziyobisi, niqiniseke kwezemidlalo” (Stay away from drugs and focus on sport), SRSA Minister Mr Fikile Mbalula told learners. “School sport is the essence of sports development in the country,” he said. Mr Mbalula acknowledged the achievements of outgoing Proteas cricket coach Gary Kirsten and marathon runner Lusapho April and encouraged learners to follow in their footsteps.

Kirsten encouraged the learners to use sport as a potential source of livelihood and as a way to constructively use their time. Acting Principal Mr Tshepo Majake said the investment would be of great assistance to the school and would create room for new types of sport such as table tennis and cricket. This would help learners to achieve excellence in the classroom and on the sports field.
