2013 International Museum Day

17 May 2013

Join in one of the many free events across the Western Cape to celebrate International Museum Day on Saturday, 18 May 2013. The theme for this year is: Museums (creativity + memory) = social change.

You will recall from his 2013 Budget Speech that Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, described DCAS support for museums as one way for local people to use their freedom to write their own local history and build local narratives of what that history means to them.

Please use the attached events calendar as your personal GPS to find a museum near you where you can enjoy a fun-filled ‘edutainment’ day of adventure, exploration and discovery.

Gather your friends and family to explore the richness of your history by participating in the exciting and interesting activities at one of the Western Cape museums this Saturday.

Iziko Museums has its own diary of events to commemorate this annual event, established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to encourage public awareness of museums in our daily lives. See www.iziko.org.za/calendar/event/international-museum-day1 for details.

This 2013 International Museum Day theme brings together the various elements that define what a museum is today, highlighting the importance of these institutions and their positive influence on society. Experience for yourself the wonderful museums we have and the role they can play in making us “better together”.
