MEDIA ALERT: Youth Day Safety Diary – Minister Plato attends Nyanga Yethu Open Mic night, Human Rights Commission Community Dialogue and Diocese of False Bay Youth Indaba

On Youth Day, tomorrow 16 June 2017, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, will be supporting various initiatives hosted in communities in Nyanga and Kuils River.

Tomorrow morning, Minister Plato will be joining the Diocese of False Bay for their Youth Indaba held in Kuils River. The Diocese is expecting 1000 young people between the ages of 16 and 35 to gather around their theme “I am, Because we are”.

Thereafter, Minister Plato is set to join the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the Nyanga Community Police Forum’s (CPF’s) Community Dialogue on The Impact of Violent Crime on Social Cohesion.

In the evening, Minister Plato will be attending an Open Mic Night hosted by Nyanga Yethu. Previous Open Mic Night and Variety Night evenings hosted by Nyanga Yethu has attracted between 800 and 1000 youth in Nyanga, per weekend.

The Department of Community Safety is partnering with Nyanga Yethu through the Alcohol Harms Reduction Game Changer to help provide youth with attractive alternative activities in a safe environment promoting recreation removed from negative social behaviour, such as alcohol abuse or premature alcohol exposure.

Nyanga Yethu has been operating in the area for the last four years and has successfully assisted the intergovernmental Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) initiative to replicate programmes in Harare. Nyanga Yethu will be running various activities throughout the Youth Day long weekend, including a Variety Night, Open Mic Night, Poetry Night, Street Soccer Night, morning Street Soccer and a Youth Prayer Service.
