WCED Arranges Revision Sessions for NSC Supplementary Examinaions

2 February 2010

"We are pleased that a total of 7 116 candidates registered for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary examinations in February and March," said Minister for Education Donald Grant on Wednesday.

"Examinations will begin on the 11th of February with Computer Applications Technology Paper 1 and will end on the 25th of March with Music Paper 2."

Grant said that in order to help prepare candidates for the examinations, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has arranged a number of revision sessions for candidates.

"We want all candidates to give these supplementary examinations their best shot, and we urge them to prepare thoroughly. We believe that the revision sessions will help, but success will ultimately depend on how well candidates prepare for these exams."

The revision sessions will take place on weekday evenings from 16h00 to 19h00 and on Saturday mornings between 09h00 and 13h00.

Grade 12 teachers will offer tutoring support for the following subjects: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Business Studies, Geography, Life Sciences and Economics.

The program will be offered at six venues, namely, COSAT, Khayelitsha; Rocklands Secondary School, Mitchells Plain; Rylands High School, Athlone; Isilimela High School, Langa; Fezeka High School, for candidates in Gugulethu and Nyanga; and Sea Point High School.

"The WCED will inform candidates of the revision sessions via sms and radio and will also ask principals to inform former learners from their schools who qualified to write the supplementary examinations."

The supplementary examinations timetable and details on the revision sessions appear on the WCED's website at http://wced.wcape.gov.za (see "2009 Examinations Results"). For further queries, contact Waheeb Gasant at 021-467-2634 or Elsa Beukes at 021- 4672622.

"In terms of our turnaround strategy to improve the matric pass rate which was announced yesterday, the fact that 7997 learners qualified to write the supplementary examinations is encouraging, as this means that each of these candidates failed to pass only one or two subjects. Therefore, in terms of our plan, we have identified the subjects that deserve special attention and will provide subject specific support at all schools with passes below the provincial average. This, in turn, will help increase the pass rate, and bring us closer to our target of an 80% pass rate in 2010," said Grant.

"It is also encouraging that so many learners have applied to write the supplementary examinations. We wish all the candidates the best of luck."
