WCED Reacts to Oranjekloof Protest March

4 February 2010

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is well aware of the concerns made by the protestors of Oranjekloof Primary and are doing all we can to resolve this matter as soon as possible. The Minister has previously visited the school to see first hand what can be done to address the issue of overcrowding.

Officials from the Ministry and the WCED met with the Moravian Church representatives on Tuesday and held initial discussions around the issue of the leases.

Apart from the leases, they discussed two other possibilities for Oranjekloof Primary.

The first being permission to place 3 mobile classrooms on the site to alleviate some of the overcrowding issues at the school, and the second, the possible willingness of the church to consider the sale of the site.

A follow up meeting will be held this afternoon and we hope to find a resolution that will benefit all parties, and most importantly, the learners of Oranjekloof.
