Media Alert: Reading Conference Aimed at Improving Quality of Learning and Teaching

2 March 2010

Tomorrow, Minister Donald Grant will be visiting the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI) where the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is currently hosting a two day reading conference for teachers during the school holidays.

The theme for the conference is "Every Child Can Read". Presentations are geared towards sharing best practice in the classroom in order to promote reading amongst learners.

Improving the reading skills of our learners is a major priority for this administration. Therefore, we are delighted by the response we have had from our teachers. Originally, the conference was geared for 300 teachers, however, after an overwhelming response, the WCED had to draw the line at 1 500 delegates.

The fact that teachers are willing to travel to the CTLI from all over the Province, as well as give up their holiday time, is a clear indication of the commitment and dedication of our teachers to improve the quality of learning and teaching in our classrooms.
