Calm Restored at Naphakade Secondary

14 April 2010
Reports indicate that the situation at Naphakade Secondary School has calmed down and that for the moment order has been restored.

There has been extensive consultation between senior representatives of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the School Governing Body (SGB) of Naphakade Secondary and community representatives.

Last night, it was agreed, in principle, that the WCED would relocate Naphakade Secondary to an alternative site, the location of which has already been negotiated with the local authority. Learners will be housed in 10-15 mobile units and provision will also be made for administration and ablution facilities.

We are working with all the relevant authorities to ensure that the relocation process will be completed as soon as possible.

Roleplayers have also agreed to desist from carrying out further violence.

Every measure possible is being taken to ensure that learning and teaching continues on Monday.

We appeal to the whole community to put the best interests of the learners first and to resist from participating in any violent action.
