We are building the equivalent of a new school every four days!

30 November 2022

Yesterday I visited Westridge Secondary School in Mitchell’s Plain and Hindle High School in Delft to view the additional Moladi classrooms being constructed for the 2023 school year.

Moladi technology is one of the new construction methods that we have been exploring as part of our unprecedented school infrastructure delivery programme. It uses plastic frames to mould concrete walls arounds steel reinforcing, and allows us to speedily construct permanent and safe school buildings.

Moladi classrooms account for 238 of the 842 classrooms we are aiming to deliver for the 2023 school year. All 238 are due for completion before school starts in January 2023.

We appreciate the commitments that our contractors have made to work through the traditional builders’ holiday, as we work together to deliver 26 000 new places in schools next year.

The overall school infrastructure delivery programme uses a combination of traditional brick-and-mortar construction, mobile classrooms, Moladi technology, refurbishment of existing structures, and construction by School Governing Bodies.

The rate of the build is unprecedented: we are building the equivalent of 1 school every 4 days, or 8 classes per day on average.

To get this done, we need the support of the entire province. Any disruption or delay will deprive learners of places next year.

We must all work together to prioritise the delivery of school infrastructure for our children, so that we have space ready for new learners arriving for the 2023 school year.
