Showcasing skills that will contribute towards our economy

20 September 2022

On Saturday, 17 September 2022, the WCED hosted their third Skills Competition at Bellville Technical High School.

The competition is dedicated to the promotion of the skilled trades and technologies as viable, first-choice career options to our youth. This competition aims to encourage young people to consider a career in skilled trades and technologies.

High school learners from around the Province competed in various areas including brickwork, cabinetmaking, and welding. The competition included construction of brick walls, creation of furniture, installation of sanitary fitments and laying of floors. (A full list of the contests and tasks are below.) Learners were given five hours to complete the tasks.

Minister David Maynier (MEC for Education) said, “Skilled trades are essential to our economy, as investment moves to the Western Cape. The Skills Competition provides a platform for learners to demonstrate their skills and it encourages them to consider careers in skilled trades. We hope to spark a long-term interest amongst our learners in developing these skills and to explore pathways into work where they can apply these skills.”
