Media Alert: Minister Grant to Visit Scottsdene Secondary School

21 August 2011

On Tuesday, Minister Grant will be visiting Scottsdene Secondary School in Kraaifontein to discuss the school's progress in improving its matric pass rate and numbers.

Scottsdene Secondary is one of 78 schools that have been classified as an "underperforming school" after it achieved less than 60% in the 2010 NSC examinations. The school's pass rate decreased from 65.4% in 2009 to 45% in 2010.

As part of the Western Cape Education Department's (WCED) strategy to decrease the number of underperforming schools in the Province, a number of intervention measures have been introduced at underperforming schools across the Province.

Tomorrow, the Minister is inviting the press to join him in a discussion with the school principal and education officials to determine what steps have been taken to support the school and if these interventions are showing positive results.

Apart from educational support in terms of teaching and learning materials and interventions, the school has also been engaged in various parents' meetings to get parents on board with the plan, as well as a psychological programme for Grade 12s to keep them motivated or to address any problems that might affect their studies.

There are currently only 55 days left before the start of the NSC. Press will also be given the opportunity to discuss the broader Grade 12 plan with the Minister. The Minister will also briefly address the Grade 12s and wish them good luck.
