Media Alert: Minister Grant to Visit New Primary School in Hout Bay

20 November 2011

On Tuesday, 22 November 2011, Minister Donald Grant will be visiting the site of the new primary school in Hout Bay, provisionally named Disa Primary School.

In the past ten years, the population of Hout Bay has grown significantly and the need for an additional primary school in the area, particularly one catering for children that live in the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement, was prioritised by this government.

In 2009, the Western Cape Government received an offer from the Struengmann Foundation to fund such a primary school.

Construction began at the new school's forestry site earlier this year, and the school is expected to open its doors in January with the enrolment of 270 learners in Grades R, 1 and 2.

The new school is state of the art and was superbly designed, taking into account the steep slope and magnificent setting. The engineers were also asked to make the school as environmentally friendly as possible.

The school will also provide a full complement of extra educational and social interventions, including assistant teachers, remedial staff, social workers, art, music, drama and sport.

Date: Tuesday, 22 November 2011
Time: 10:00
Venue: Disa Primary School, Hout Bay

Directions: Coming from Constantia Nek, turn left 30 metres before the first traffic circle that leads up to Imizamo Yethu. This is the traffic circle with the police station on the one corner. Continue up the small road, past the clinic. The second gate on the left is the entrance to the school site; there is a security guard at the gate. If coming from Llandudno side, obviously adjust accordingly; go past the circle and take the first road on the right.
