Media Alert: Minister Grant to Attend Teacher Training Session

1 July 2013

Tomorrow, 2 July, Minister Donald Grant will be visiting the Crawford Campus of the College of Cape Town to meet and greet educators that are currently participating in a training programme for language and mathematics.

Teacher development and training, especially in language and mathematics, remains a key component of our provincial strategy for education as it directly impacts the delivery of the curriculum to the learner.

While we have seen improved results in our language and mathematics testing over the last few years, we still face some tough challenges. There is still considerable work that needs to be done to ensure that these improvements continue to happen as we move towards acceptable outcomes for all our learners in these tests.  One component of this is educator training.

Therefore, during the holiday period, approximately 1 800 Foundation and Intermediate educators have registered for language training and over 1 900 for mathematics training, which forms part of our language and mathematics strategy.

In languages, the training includes workshops on Effective Literacy and Language Development, Questioning techniques and Comprehension, Independent and Group Reading and Shared and Independent Writing.

In mathematics, educators will have the opportunity to attend workshops on Numbers, Operations and Relationships, Space and Shape, Measurement, Data Handling and How to Make your School a Numeracy Hub.
