Home Affairs Takes ID Application Services to Cape Town Teenagers

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Home Affairs, Fatima Chohan, will on Saturday, 28 January 2012, assist 16-year-olds with the application of Identity Documents (IDs) at the Vangate Mall in Cape Town, where the department's mobile office will be stationed.

This drive is part of the department's ongoing National Population Registration (NPR) campaign which aims to ensure that each and every citizen, young and old, has been registered and has the right document at a specified time of their lives.

The purpose of this campaign, launched by President Jacob Zuma and the Minister of Home Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, is to ensure that the registration of all child births is done within 30 days of delivery, that 16-year-olds and above apply for IDs and to end late registration of births.

An ID is an essential requirement for the Matric examinations. It is also a passport to a better life, as it enables holders to access all social services provided by government as well as opportunities for, amongst others, further education and training.

Learners from schools in the area, including from Langa, Gugulethu, Heideveld and Bonteheuwel, are expected to take advantage of the Home Affairs mobile office at Vangate Mall to apply for their IDs. The mobile office will also render all other Home Affairs services to the general public.

The mobile offices will be located at the Piazza at Vangate Mall, Vanguard Drive, Athlone from 09:00 to 13:00.
