Public Invited to Attend Landfill Monitoring Committee Meetings

3 May 2010
The general public is invited to attend the next Landfill Audits and Monitoring Committee meeting which will take place on 20 May 2010.

The City of Cape Town owns and operates three waste disposal facilities in the Western Cape, namely:

  • Vissershok (near the Morning Star smallholding)
  • Coastal Park (near Muizenberg, off Baden Powell Drive)
  • Bellville South (in Sack's Circle)

These sites are licensed for waste disposal operations, and the permit/licence specifically states the types of waste which may be accepted on site and the manner in which the waste must be disposed.

All three sites are audited by an external auditor at least three times a year to assess compliance with the permit/licence conditions and general operations in terms of the Minimum Requirement for Waste Disposal. This is a guideline series of documents published by the Department of Water Affairs.

The Monitoring Committee comprises representatives from the compulsory member organisations i.e. Department of Water Affairs, Department of Environmental Affairs, the Permit Holder and Provincial Government departments as well as representatives from the voluntary membership i.e. ratepayers associations, interest groups and members of the public.

The details of the next meeting are as follows:

Date: Thursday 20 May

Time: 16:30

Venue: Vissershok landfill site, Corner of Frankdale Road and N7 next to the FFS Refinery (6km north of Chevron Crude Oil Refinery on the N7)
