Human Trafficking Victim Found in Table View Brothel

6 June 2010
A joint operation by the City of Cape Town's Vice Squad and the Table View South African Police Service (SAPS) has led to the arrest of a brothel owner on charges of human trafficking after it was found that a seventeen (17) year old girl had been brought to his Cape Town brothel under false pretences.

The joint operation, targeting various brothels in the Table View area, took place on Saturday evening. The Vice Squad and police officers found a seventeen (17) year old girl at one of the brothels. After talking to her, the officers learned that she had been brought from her home town of Klerksdorp under false pretences of baby sitting and found herself working in a brothel. She was taken to Table View SAPS from where she received the necessary care.

Charges under the Sexual Offences Act, relating to the keeping of a brothel, selling of sex and trafficking in persons for sexual purposes, were brought against the brothel owner. The case was handed over to the Hawks who made an arrest on Sunday.

"The Vice Squad appeals to members of the community to report possible brothels in their area to 0800 225 669. You might be saving a victims' life in doing this", said Neil Arendse, Spokesperson for the City's Specialised Law Enforcement Services.
