Metro Police Recover Stolen Firearm in Bokmakierie

9 June 2010
A stolen firearm was recovered and one (1) suspect was arrested by Metro Police officers in Bokmakierie last night after a tip-off was received from a member of the community.

The officers were doing routine patrols in the area when a resident approached them and informed them of a suspect that had a firearm in his possession in the area.

The officers approached the suspect from the canal side between Seventh and Eight Avenues. When the suspect spotted them, he ran away in the direction of Fourth Avenue where he tried to hide in a house. He was apprehended and searched and a Norinco 9mm with 9 rounds of ammunition in a magazine was found in his possession. The suspect was arrested and charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to Metro Police's Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro: "The recovery of the firearm can be regarded as a just reward for the hard work our members are putting in towards the recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. One firearm recovered can be seen as a victory as it means one firearm less in the hands of a criminal."

It was later discovered that the firearm was reported as stolen at the Mitchells Plain police station. It must still be established whether it can be linked to other crimes.

Note: Photos of the firearm and ammunition can be forwarded on request to editors.
