Metro Police Nab Nine Suspects

City of Cape Town Metro Police Officers arrested nine suspects this past weekend for various charges including possession of an illegal firearm, drugs and stolen goods.

In the early hours of Saturday morning (03 July) officers responded to a complaint of a robbery in Khayelitsha. On arrival at the scene, they spotted two suspects running away with a cell phone. The officers gave chase, apprehended the suspects and confiscated the cell phone, which the complainant verified as being his phone. The complainant informed the officers that he had been robbed at gun point. The officers searched the suspects and found an illegal firearm. It was later determined that the firearm belongs to a member of the South African Police Service.

In Bellville, one suspect was arrested for possession of illegal cigarettes. Metro Police Officers were conducting routine patrols in the area when they noticed a white Mazda Rustler bakkie with a tinted canopy driving up and down Strand Street. The officers pulled over the suspicious vehicle and searched it. They found and confiscated two thousand five hundred (2500) Pacific Blue cigarette packets.

In Athlone, Metro Police responded to a tip-off from the public that a drug deal was to occur on the intersection of the M5 and Klipfontein Road. "The drug deal was in progress when officers arrived at the scene. They arrested three suspects' confiscated nine dagga parcels and three thousand two hundred and thirty rand (R3 230.00) in cash," said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.

Two suspects were also arrested for drinking in public in Sea Point, while another suspect was arrested for possession of narcotics in Cape Town.

The following items were confiscated during the various arrests made:

  • Eight (8) x one gram (1g) cocaine packages
  • Two (2) packets of TIK
  • Two (2) crack cocaine pipes
  • Twenty four (24) dagga cigarettes
  • Two (2) dagga parcels
  • Four (4) bank bags of dagga
  • Ten (10) TIK Lollies
