Media Alert: City to Launch New Public Open Space in Delft

10 August 2010

The City of Cape Town will celebrate another phase of the 'Quality Open Space' project in Delft tomorrow, 12 August. The City's Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, and Councillor for Ward 12, Councillor Willie Jaftha will officiate.

Date: Thursday, 12 August

Time: 10:00

Venue: Belhar Council Chamber, Belhar Drive, Belhar

All media are welcome to attend.

Background

The 'Quality Open Space' project seeks to link the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ to local improvement initiatives. Of equal importance is the need to extend the existing City programme of providing public open spaces where people can gather and socialise.

The programme focuses on creating a lasting legacy by establishing neighbourhood public places that are multi-functional and offer scope for new community events to consolidate the existing social calendar. Moreover, when communities take ownership of the management of events, it benefits civil society.

The intention is to create one public open space in each Sub-Council. The completed spaces will allow a variety of special events and functions to take place. Such events should be initiated and owned by civic organisations under the auspices of the Sub-Council and could include mini-soccer tournaments where associated with sport fields; informal trade markets and food courts; funfair activities; and entertainment by local artists.
