Shark Siren at Muizenberg Beach Temporarily out of Order

12 August 2010

The City of Cape Town would like to notify all beach users that the shark siren at Muizenberg Beach is out of order, thus affecting the Shark Spotters' usual means of warning the public that a shark has been spotted.

A new siren was ordered timeously, but upon arrival it proved ineffective. Another siren is on order and should arrive within the next 5 - 7 days. These sirens are not easily available, and must be specially ordered from Australia.

In the interim, the staff on the beach are using air horns and a loud hailer to notify the public of the presence of sharks in the water. This method is not as effective as the usual shark siren and the public should take note of this when going into the water.

The City apologises for the inconvenience and appeals to swimmers to please be more vigilant for the next week, after which the new siren should arrive.

The City thanks the public for their patience with this matter.
