Durbanville Nature Reserve Now Open on Weekends

The City of Cape Town is pleased to announce that Durbanville Nature Reserve will now be open to visitors on weekends between October 2010 and June 2011, from 07:00 to 19:00. The nature reserve is situated next to the Durbanville Racecourse, along Racecourse Road. It offers beautiful walks, picnicking and birdwatching, and entrance is free.

The six hectare nature reserve supports the critically endangered vegetation types Swartland shale renosterveld and Cape Flats sand fynbos. It is also home to a number of endangered plant species, as well as the endangered Cape rain frog. In October the colourful spring flowers may still be seen and visitors may spot animals such as the small grey mongoose, angulate tortoise, and various species of birds and butterflies.

During weekdays the nature reserve is open from 07:30 to 16:00, and an environmental education programme is available for schools, presented by Cape for Kids. Interested schools or groups can contact Cape for Kids directly on 021 790 6067 or forward an email to ali@capeforkids.com.

Durbanville Nature Reserve is one of more than 30 nature reserves and natural areas managed by the City of Cape Town. Together with other natural areas in the city, it conserves Cape Town's unique biodiversity and heritage.
