Media Alert: City Promotes Safety Information for Elder Abuse Awareness Day

26 September 2010

The city's 107 Public Emergency Communication Centre and Fire and Rescue Services, in partnership with Hottentots Holland Meals-on-Wheels, will host an event for 200 senior citizens in the Somerset West area to commemorate Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The senior citizens will be reminded of the importance of using the 107 line, which they can call if their life or property is threatened. Fire and Rescue services staff will also give a presentation on the prevention of fires in the home and provide practical advice on what to do in the event of a fire.

Senior citizens are often both a vulnerable and forgotten group. The 107 public education and awareness team is thus making a special effort to reach out to the elderly and empower them with the necessary knowledge for dealing with emergency situations.

Date: Wednesday, 29 September

Time: 10:00 - 12:30

Venue: Somerset West Library Hall, Victoria Street, Somerset West

All media are invited to attend. Please RSVP by 16:00 on Tuesday, 28 September by emailing lisa.geswindt@capetown.gov.za.
