Residents Encouraged to Support New Local Market in Parkwood

8 December 2010

The City of Cape Town's weekly Parkwood Market enjoyed its second successful trading day on Sunday 05 December 2010. There was a festive atmosphere and traders confirmed an increase in visitors since the market was launched on Sunday 28 November.

The traders are now readying themselves for the next market on Sunday 12 December, and have stocked up for the festive season.

The market runs every Sunday from 07:00 till 16:00 and offers a selection of local products, including fresh produce and home-made food, clothing, household products, potted plants and flowers.

It is the brain-child of local Ward Councillor, Johannes Burger, who hopes it will address unemployment in the area by creating vending opportunities.

The City's Economic and Human Development Department brought the market to life, with the support of the Parkwood Development Forum. Before the market was launched, twenty (20) traders were selected through an advertised tender process. Each trader pays a monthly tariff of fifty rand (R50.00) and the City will review the operational and logistical arrangements in the new year.

Traders sell their wares on the periphery of the upgraded Klip Road Cemetery parking area, along Prince George Drive and De Waal Road and there is sufficient parking available.

Residents are encouraged to support this local trading initiative, especially those looking for unique or locally-made festive season gifts.
