Mayor Plato Continues to Launch Successful Clean-Up Campaign throughout Cape Town

8 December 2010

The Mayor's Clean-up Campaign is well underway in various communities across Cape Town and has thus far proved immensely successful. This programme is aimed at cleaning up the streets, removing graffiti and addressing crime in neighbourhoods by employing local residents.

An amount of thirteen point five (R13.5m) million rand has been allocated to the campaign as part of the 2010/2011 budget and various City Departments are involved.

The City's Solid Waste Department employs local labour from each area's Sub-Council database to conduct a physical clean-up of their community for a period of one month. Other Departments are also involved at no cost to the campaign. In conjunction with the clean-up, an educational programme is carried out at libraries, schools and in public meetings.

"The campaign is not just a once-off clean-up, but includes the introduction of ongoing community-based activities that are aimed at improving community cleanliness in a sustainable manner", said Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.

"I believe that living in a clean neighbourhood will restore pride and dignity to the residents of the area and that the communities will be uplifted by transforming their neighbourhoods themselves. I encourage all residents to join the campaign and help the appointed staff to clean their neighbourhoods. A clean environment leads to a cleaner attitude and overall conduct. Participation in this campaign will help to keep our communities free of grime," he said.
