Metro Police Dog Unit Arrest One Suspect and Confiscate Unshelled Abalone

The City of Cape Town's Metro Police Dog Unit arrested one suspected and confiscated two hundred and thirty-three (233) unshelled abalone in Somerset West today, 10 December 2010. The abalone has an estimated street value of one hundred thousand rand (R100 000).

Officers were conducting routine patrols in the area when they received a tip-off that a vehicle was transporting abalone. After obtaining a description of the suspect and vehicle, they embarked on a search. The officers found the vehicle heading towards Somerset West on the R44. The unshelled abalone was found in six (6) black bags in the boot of the vehicle.

The thirty-three (33) year-old suspect was arrested and taken to the Somerset West police station where he was charged with possession of abalone.
