12 December 2010

City of Cape Town Metro Police officers conducted various joint operations with City Traffic Services and the South African Police Services this weekend, as part of the City and the Provincial Government's overall festive season readiness plan.

Officers are already conducting routine patrols at the City's beaches. At Mnandi Beach, forty-four (44) traffic fines were issued and thirteen (13) by-law contraventions recorded during such patrols. Four (4) of the by-law contraventions were for drinking alcohol in public.

"The public are reminded that the Metro Police will not tolerate consumption of alcohol on beaches and there will be a concerted clamp-down this festive season to ensure beach safety," said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.

During two separate roadblocks held in Milnerton and Lansdowne on Friday 10 December, officers arrested nine (9) motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Also on Friday Metro Police officers arrested six (6) suspects in Grassy Park while conducting routine patrols. The suspects were found with three (3) large parcels of dagga and four (4) packets of TIK and were charged with possession of illegal narcotics.

Later that evening members of the Substance Abuse Unit arrested three (3) suspects for possession of narcotics in Woodstock and Kleinvlei.

On Sunday afternoon, 12 December, Metro Police officers arrested eight (8) drunk drivers in Duinefontein Road, Manenberg. The same team arrested another two (2) suspects in Kewtown, Athlone for possession of illegal narcotics after they found and confiscated one hundred (100) Mandrax tablets.

During a roadblock in Hout Bay later that afternoon, officers arrested nine (9) motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. A further suspect was arrested for armed robbery after trying to rob a member of the public of her handbag in Victoria Road, Hout Bay.
