Premier Helen Zille to Embark on Second Cycle Tour

26 October 2012

From Saturday 27 October to Monday 29 October, Premier Helen Zille will be cycling through the Overberg and Cape Winelands districts in the Western Cape Government’s 110% GREEN Better Together Cycle Tour to promote cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle and a “green” mode of transport, and to hand over bicycles to schools and neighbourhood watches as opportunities that enable citizens to fulfil their responsibilities better.

This is the second Better Together Cycle Tour, following the first one in June which went from Plettenberg Bay to Khayelitsha. The Cycle Tour group will again include provincial Cabinet Ministers, the Bicycle Empowerment Network, Cycling SA and Western Cape Government employees working on projects like Shova Kalula and Safely Home.

The Cycle Tour will culminate in an event on Monday 29 October in Worcester with the 110% GREEN campaign, a Western Cape Government catalytic initiative to build a green economy in the province and advance its goal to become the Green Economy Hub of South Africa. Premier Zille announced the campaign in her State of the Province Address in February and launched it on 05 June where she unveiled 30 ‘flagship companies’ who are already implementing sustainability principles and will help promote the campaign to get the Western Cape to “go green”.

The 110% GREEN Better Together Cycle Tour is inspired by one of these flagship companies, the Victoria and Albert Baths, a Worcester-based business that bought bicycles for their employees to address a serious absenteeism problem resulting from unreliable public transport. By taking this action, the company stepped into the green economy by taking an innovative approach to address a standard problem. The purpose of the 110% GREEN Better Together Cycle Tour is to trigger a chain reaction of other companies similarly to take action to build a green economy in the Western Cape and join the 110% GREEN network.

The Cycle Tour will cover approximately 110km – to echo 110% GREEN – passing through Villiersdorp, Rawsonville, Bonnievale, Ashton and Robertson, ending with a cycle into Worcester on the morning of Monday 29 October, joined by cyclists representing the Worcester business community and other local organisations.
