Over the last two years, essential renovations have taken place at the Horizon Secure Care Centre with the Western Cape Department of Social Development making a total capital investment of R138 million.
This facility is one of seven secure Child and Youth Care Centres (CYCC) owned and managed by the provincial department for youth in conflict with the law and those that pose behavioral challenges.
On 16 July 2024, Provincial Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt, and Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, will showcase the completed upgrades at Horizon. These upgrades will ensure the optimal functioning of the facility and creates more opportunities for the development of the young residents.
This is a unique opportunity for the media to go on a tour of a secure care centre. Space is limited and strict security protocols will be in place to ensure the safety of residents, staff, and guests. No unauthorized articles will be allowed: vapes/cigarettes, keys, handbags, money, weapons, and cellphones/laptops/tablets (arrangements can be made for media that require the use of these devices inside the facility). These items should be left in vehicles as lockers are limited.
RSVPs are essential for entry.
Media wishing to attend are required to RSVP by Monday, 15 July at 09:00. Please send the following details to Monique Mortlock-Malgas at monique.mortlock@westerncape.gov.za:
