In celebration of International Child and Youth Care Workers' Week, taking place from the 3 to 6 May 2022, the Western Cape Minister for Social Development, Sharna Fernandez, wishes to acknowledge the ongoing commitment and dedication of each and every single Child and Youth Care Worker (CYCW) in the Western Cape.
This week is celebrated annually and pays tribute to the invaluable role that CYCWs play in building resilient communities across the globe.
The theme adopted this year is 'Valuing a Resilient Profession.' The South African Council for Social Service Professions highlights that this theme relates to the profession's strength as a whole and the extraordinary resilience displayed by so many South African CYCWs in their service to our country's vulnerable families.
In recognition of the valuable role played by all our CYCWs, Minister Fernandez said, "Our Child and Youth Care workers are indeed highly valued and play a significant role in developing important relationships amongst our most vulnerable children, youth and their respective families and communities. We deeply appreciate all those heroes and heroines who continue to unselfishly give up their time and remain committed and passionate to this important cause."
In the Western Cape, there are currently 653 CYCWs and nine care centres. Furthermore, the Department of Social Development also funds 53 NPO childcare centres in the Province.
"Let us all join hands in thanking all our Child and Youth Care Workers for always standing tall and acting as pillars of hope to the many vulnerable individuals and families they support," concluded Minister Fernandez.
