Minister Fernandez observes International Day of Families

14 May 2021

Tomorrow, 15 May 2021, marks the observation of the International Day of Families, as proclaimed by the United Nations in 1993.

This internationally recognised day provides an opportunity to promote the awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

“Whilst the family unit remains the most important institution for a child’s overall development, we are reminded daily that the very institution that is supposed to be a safe-haven for our children, can at times become the most unsafe space, “ said the Western Cape Minister for Social Development, Sharna Fernandez.

“Any breakdown in a family's functioning and its ability to provide care increases the vulnerability of its members and the surrounding community. Therefore, we all have a role to play in helping build families that function well and communities that care for, protect and develop children appropriately," added Minister Fernandez.

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) with the support of its Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) partners provides families and children with access to a wide array of social welfare services that focuses on the well-being of the family, believing this to be critical for the overall functioning of society.

The Department works specifically with vulnerable or at-risk families and communities so that we provide services that are aimed at building on the strengths of children, parents, caregivers, families and communities.

This year, R 680 million has been budgeted towards the Department’s Children and Families programmes.

“Together, we can build families that are strong and deeply connected to safe and secure communities that are supported by rich networks of care and support services that promote family strength,” concluded Minister Fernandez.
