Minister De Lille Dispatches Social Workers to Families Affected by Somerset West Fire
Patricia de Lille, the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, has cautioned communities in the Western Cape "to be vigilant during the last few weeks of the fire season".
"The Province is experiencing very hot weather and the bush is dry after summer. These two ingredients are creating very dangerous fire conditions and are in some cases having a devastating effect on communities," Minister de Lille says.
"In other cases, human error has led to the loss of lives. All of us must work together to ensure that human error becomes a thing of the past."
The Minister yesterday dispatched social development teams to the Redhill Informal Settlement in Fish Hoek, to Somerset West, Goodwood and Lavender Hill, all of which have been affected by fires over the weekend.
"On behalf of the Department, I would like to convey my condolences to the Redhill Informal Settlement family that tragically lost a loved one in the fire," says de Lille.
"Those affected at the four sites will be given trauma counselling, baby packs, brunches and blankets where necessary."
"It is crucial that those affected are offered trauma counselling. Anyone wanting to receive trauma counselling can call 0800 220 250 for further information," de Lille says.
