Minister Fritz sends off SA Squad to Kung Fu Tournament

3 April 2019

Yesterday, the Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, handed over team kits to the second South African Kung Fu Development Squad, who will be competing in the Hong Kong International Kung Fu Tournament and Championship.

Trained by MJ Li Kung Fu, the 10 squad members will be competing for the second time against over 6000 athletes from 32 different countries and will be representing Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain, Paarl, Caledon and Riviersonderend. The team previously brought home seven medals; including two gold, three bronze and two silver medals.

Minister Fritz said, “The aim of MJ Li Kung Fu is to uplift vulnerable young people through the modality of Kung Fu. Through their hard work and dedication, this organisation has made it possible for the second youth development squad to attend the Hong Kong International Kung Fu Tournament and Championship. This has broadened the horizons of young people who ordinarily wouldn’t have such opportunities. It has further instilled in them values such as commitment, hard work and dedication.”

Minister Fritz further said, “MJ Li Kung Fu is not only breaking down socio-economic barriers in the world of Kung Fu and sports, but also gender-based barriers. Amongst their athletes is Salma Doran, who will be the first South African female athlete to compete in the Hong Kong International Kung Fu Tournament and Championship.”

Under the leadership of Minister Fritz, the Western Cape DSD will continue to support organisations which empower and uplift the most vulnerable in our society.
