Minister Fritz Condemns Shooting Resulting in Death of 3 Year Old Boy

5 March 2019

The Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, has condemned the shooting in Pook se Bos, Rylands, that resulted in the death of a three-year-old boy who was caught in the crossfire and subsequently died in hospital.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday at 10:15am at Pook se Bos informal settlement. Unidentified men in a white light delivery vehicle shot in the direction of the child’s home.

MEC Fritz said, “We are deploying a social worker to investigate the needs of those affected by the shooting. If you have been affected by the incident and require psycho-social support, please contact your local DSD office. Alternatively, you can call the DSD Hotline on 0800 220 250 for support.”

MEC Fritz further added, “Violence, especially against children, has no place in our society. We all have a role to play as government, civil society, religious leaders, and families to ensure that we work tirelessly to eradicate violence in all its forms. I call on parents and communities to be extra vigilant especially regarding the safety of children who will shortly be enjoying their Easter holidays. We must work Better Together if we are to keep our young people safe.”

Our social workers and NGO partners will continue to provide psycho-social support and other interventions to the family and those affected by the shooting.
