Department to support family and children of murdered De Doorns woman

7 September 2017

Social workers from the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) are rendering trauma counselling and child protection services to the family of murdered 25 year-old Lorina van Wyk.

As per the Children’s Act of 2005, social workers have ensured the two remaining children - a 5 year-old boy and 11 month-old girl - are in safe care. They are being placed in the care of their relatives.

The family and child remain very traumatized, and social workers have arranged for ongoing trauma debriefing and support.

The circumstances of this case are truly tragic, and we are calling on our partners at the South African Police Services to conduct a thorough investigation, and prepare a strong case for prosecution.

There should be no space for woman abusers and murderers in our society, and a successful prosecution and conviction would send a strong message to our society that the violence against women and children must stop. Justice must be done.
