Youth Month: Department launches Youth Café mobi-site

22 June 2017

As part of our continuing Youth Month commemorations, the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) is proud to officially launch the Youth Café mobi-site.

The Youth Café mobi-site will allow young people to access information and services on a website which supports mobile browsing, and can be accessed at www.westerncape.gov.za/youth-cafe.

Youth Cafés are an initiative borne out of the Provincial Youth Development Strategy, and the Western Cape Government’s new Provincial Strategic Goals.

Youth Cafés provide a safe and easily accessible space for young people, to access new skills, training and economic opportunities such as employment or starting their own business. Each Youth Café is operated by an NGO partner contracted by the Department, and has its own specific characteristics. DSD has already established 6 Youth Cafés across the province;

  • Rocklands (R-Labs),
  • Vangate Mall (R-Labs),
  • George (SUFF),
  • Vrygrond (SOZO Foundation),
  • Oudtshoorn (SUFF),
  • Nyanga Junction (Amandla EduFootbal).

Each Youth Café is fully equipped with computers and IT infrastructure, seminar rooms, training sites for a variety of hard and soft skills, and barista coffee machines.

This mobi-site will provide information on the various Youth Cafés, specifically what each one offers, where it’s located, how to get in contact with the facility etc.

The Department will continue to roll out services and opportunities to young people, and has allocated R15.6-million this financial year to youth services.

We continue to encourage young people to use our Youth Cafés, especially those not in employment, education or training. As we continue to mark Youth Month, Minister Fritz will be launching the province’s seventh Youth Café in Groot Brak River (Mossel Bay), and relaunch the Mitchells Plain Youth Café at the end of the month.
