Imizamo Yethu Fire: Department providing relief and trauma counselling

12 March 2017

The Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Adv. Albert Fritz, will visit the scene of the devastating fire in Imizamo Yethu, outside Cape Town.

The fire has already claimed three lives, and is estimated to have destroyed over 1000 structures, displacing nearly 4000 people. This makes it one of the worst fire incidents this year.

Social workers from our Metro South Regional office and officials from our Social Relief of Distress (SRD) programme are on the ground rendering trauma counselling, and are coordinating relief services in conjunction with our NGO partners, the Red Cross.

We are appealing to the public to assist by donating what they can (clothing, water, food, accommodation, personal hygiene items etc.) to various drop points, such as;

  • Red Cross (21 Broad Road, Wynberg)
  • Pick n Pay (Hout Bay),
  • Hout Bay police station,
  • Hout Bay fire station.

For more information, the public can contact contacting the DSD hotline on 0800 220 250 or the Red Cross on 021 797 5360.
