Department warns against SASSA scammers

27 September 2016

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) would like to remind grant recipients never to divulge their social grant details or pin numbers over the phone or email to anybody claiming to be from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

This comes after MEC Albert Fritz recently received complaints from residents from all over province, especially from the Metro Region, of people having received calls from scammers claiming to be SASSA reps.

SASSA is a national entity run by the National Department of Social Development. The provincial DSD has no operational control over SASSA.

In 2015 DSD received 96 complaints and so far 103 cases since the beginning of this year. Where possible, we assist SASSA in investigating these matters.

The public can report any suspected social grant fraud and corruption to the SASSA hotline on 0800 60 10 11, or the DSD hotline on 0800 220 250.
