Boosting food security in rural communities during the drought is a key priority for the Western Cape Government.
Tomorrow (15 November 2017), Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, is in the Cederberg to celebrate residents who are making a contribution to food security.
This initiative is linked to World Food Day, which is marked around the world to raise awareness around food security.
The best food security projects in the region will be awarded. Scoring criteria included water-savings methods such as collecting rain water and using grey water.
The judging panel included officials from the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, the Western Cape Department of Education and Casidra (an implementing agency of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture).
The initiative is held in partnership with SAB Miller, who is sponsoring some of the prizes.
In this financial year, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture is investing R11 million into food security projects.
