Minister Winde Announces New Seafront Development

8 July 2012

The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism is spearheading a long-term development project that will see the development of a route between False Bay, Gordon's Bay and Cape Point, drawing in all the coastal and near-coastal communities in the area, including Lwandle, Macassar, Khayelitsha, Mitchell's Plain, Strandfontein, Vrygrond, Steenberg, Retreat, Grassy Park, Ocean View and Masiphumelele.

The communities in those areas will collaborate with the Western Cape Government in the creation of an exciting array of new tourism, retail, service and entertainment businesses including:

  • A revitalised Muizenberg shopping and restaurant precinct.
  • A revitalised Kalk Bay main road with new participants, especially from among the descendants of those who were expelled from the area under the Group Areas Act.
  • A more tourist-friendly Fish Hoek, with inputs from Ocean View and Masiphumelele residents.
  • The upgrading of Monwabisi Beach in Khayelitsha.

Minister Winde said: "I am particularly excited about this project as it will bring in communities that were perhaps previously not given the opportunity to have a say in what becomes of their surroundings. The False Bay, Gordon's Bay and Cape Point coast lines are amongst many other locations that we have earmarked for development. Similar projects are underway in the West Coast, Cape Aghulas, Lamberts Bay Bird Island and False Bay Ecology Park."

Minister Winde added: "A partnership agreement will be finalised between the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town and the National Department of Tourism to set the wheels in motion for this project. The success of this project will be highly dependent on the full co-operation of all spheres of government. This development must be seen as a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach in line with our vision of 'Better Together'."

Minister Winde made the announcement at the annual Western Cape Government Tourism, Arts and Entertainment Plenary Session held in Cape Town on 9 July.
